Chamomile

Botanical name: Matricaria recutita

Common name:  German Chamomile

Chamomile is a member of the daisy family.

Habitat: Chamomile is a hardy herb, and can survive a mild winter with very little maintenance.  I have chamomile in my garden and it comes back every year, but has not produced blooms yet.

Info:  Chamomile is one of the most common herbs used for treatment of daily stresses, nervous stomach, insomnia, and skin irritations.  It is also used to treat allergies and asthma.  The smell of chamomile alone is relaxing.  It has a sweet healing smell.

Personal info:  I use chamomile in several ways.  Of course the tea, I also add Catnip to a blend which is excellent for colic, nervous stomach and aids in digestion.  It is a wonderful relaxing herb for the nervous system, and it is a natural anti-inflammatory.  With the Catnip added it is wonderful for pain.  I also use Chamomile in a mixture for dream pillows along with Rose, Hops, Lavender and Mugwort.  Recently I have made an astringent called “The Queen of Hungary’s Water” that has Chamomile with a mixture of other herbs.

 *Wonderful for Children

Properties:  Calmative, nervine, anti-spasmodic, amodyne (relieves pain or analgesic), diaphoretic, emmenagogue, carminative
