GUARANA

Botanical name: Paullinia cupana

Common name: Brazilian cocoa

Habitat: Guarana is a creeping shrub native to Venezuela and Northern Brazil in the Amazon rain forest.  The fruit are small, bright red, and contain black seeds.  Guarana seeds are rich in caffeine and contain up to 4-8% caffeine, more than coffee beans, which contain approximately 1-2.5% caffeine. Unlike coffee, the amount of caffeine doesn’t have to be listed on guarana drinks.  Guarana is reputed to be a stimulant and increase mental alertness, fight fatigue and increase stamina and physical endurance.  Some evidence indicates that guarana may suppress appetite and increase fat burning.

*Known as a healthy stimulant and perfect sustaining food substitute during fasts and diets, it’s also fun!  Gurarana truly has some remarkable properties and does seem to awaken one’s senses.  Though the natives of Brazil use it daily – it has been part of their life and diet for centuries.  I caution against casual use of this herb especially for those not use to the effects of caffeine.  Reserve the use of Guarana for those special times when an extra boost of energy is what is needed.   ~Rosemary Gladstar~

Safety: Guarana should not be used by people with heart conditions, diabetes, high blood pressure, epilepsy, over active thyroid. Anxiety, insomnia, and kidney disease.  Use under the supervision of a Health Practitioner

Properties: tannins, nervine, aphrodisiac, narcotic (slight), stimulant

Personal info: I make an energy bar with Guarana called “Zoomballs” with added honey, seseame butter or almond butter, ginseng, bee pollen, royal jelly, coconut, carob chips and walnuts.  It is great for long hikes or camping trips for energy and nutrition.
