YARROW
Botanical name: achillea mullefolium
Common name: Soldiers woundwort, Milfoil, Nosebleed
Habitat: Grown in Europe, North America and Asia. A number of species are used as garden ornaments. The flowering tops of yarrow are used in herbal medicine.
Info: One of the best known herbal remedies for fevers. A hot infusion induces a therapeutic sweat which cools fevers and expels toxins. Yarrow is considered a specific antihemorragic wound remedy and used on the battlefield (thus names after the warrior Achilles). In fact crushed or powdered yarrow can be applied topically or taken internally for any condition of acute bleeding, especially from cuts or abrasions (as opposed to Arnica, which is better for strains or sprains).
Yarrow has positive affects on the following
- Improves cardiovascular conditions, partly by regulating blood pressure
- Improves appetite
- Purifies blood
- Regulates menstrual cycle – due to the sterols in yarrow, which function in a similar fashion to hormones
- Repairs damaged or worn out body tissues – due to the presence of silicia
- Removes heat and toxins from the body, by increasing sweating
- Stimulates the circulatory system
- Stimulates the flow of bile
Personal: I use Yarrow in a salve to clean cuts, stop bleeding wounds, bruises and nosebleeds. This herb is also wonderful to repel insects. My new favorite way to use Yarrow is to treat internal bleeding from ulcers. We use yarrow in a very effective blood pressure formula as well.
Properties: antibiotic, anti-inflammatory (due to it’s oils), antiseptic (due to it’s oils), antispasmodic, astringent, diuretic and sedative
*some people who take yarrow may occasionally develop and allergy rash. Yarrow might increase sensitivity to sunlight. Yarrow should not be used to treat deep, large or infected wounds.
*yarrow is not recommended during pregnancy or breast feeding
