MULLEIN

Botanical name: Verbascum thapsus

Common name: Mullein bunny ears, flannelleaf, Jacobs staff

Habitat: Grows throughout the world, waysides, fields, train routes, hillsides, disturbed grounds and rich gardens across the countryside.  Mullein grows by every train track in the country.  I think the soul of this world traveler enjoys the traveling song of the iron horse.

Info: the flowers are infused in oil and are a powerful medicine for ear infections, swollen glands, inflammation and trauma.  Warm the oil and apply topically to traumatized areas.  Mullein leaf can be smoked for asthma or respiratory problems.  Mullein is used for asthma, bronchitis, COPD, common cold, sore throat and coughs.  The root can be used into a tea for lymphatic congestion, cramps, and diarrhea.  Candles and torches can be made from the leaves and the stems.

Personal: I make oil from the macerated flowers for ear infections; we drink Mullein/peppermint tea for coughs and colds.  When I am riding my bicycle I always stop and admire the Mullein, it is one of my favorite plants!  The Grandfather.

Properties: expectorant, demulcent, antispasmodic, antitussive (suppressing cough), astringent, anodyne (relives, soothes pain, analgesic), vulnerary
