NETTLES (Stinging Nettles)

Botanical name:  urtica diovica – small nettle, urtica urens

Common name:  stinging nettles

Habitat:  Nettles is a leavy plant that is found in most temperate regions of the world.  The generic name comes from the Latin word “uro” which means “I burn.”  Look for nettles in rich soils, disturbed habitats, moist woodlands, thickets, along rivers and along partially shaded trails.

Info:  Nettles is used to reduce inflammation in allergic responses, arthritis, lupus, nettles stimulates hair growth.  Nettles is very nourishing to the whole system, specifically the adrenals and kidneys.  Use to increase circulation, great for joints, one of the few herbs for the thyroid gland, promotes the flow of urine and is useful for kidneys, feeds the body nutrition, especially potassium and iron (this herb is also full of tons of minerals).  Nettles are an expectorant (removes mucous), aids the body by building up the immune system to allergens.  They are excellent for anemia – their vitamin C content ensures the iron they contain is properly absorbed.  Nettles increases the excretion of uric acid which explains why nettles are a remedy for arthritis and gout.

Personal info:  Stinging nettles is absolutely one of my favorite herbs!  We drink nettle tea at our home daily for wonderful nutrition.  I also use nettle capsules daily to build up my immunity to allergens, since taking the nettles my hair is much more thick and shiny and grows like crazy.

Properties:  Diuretic, astringent, tonic, hemostatic, galactogogue, expectorant, nutritive

*safe for pregnant women and children
