Nashville Children’s Theatre Drama Camp Gets a “Two Thumbs Up”! (A Review)

Did you know that Nashville Children’s Theatre is the oldest professional children’s theatre company in America?  It is also Tennessee’s only professional, non-profit theatre solely dedicated exclusively to children and families.  Pretty AWESOME, if you ask me!!

We decided to give NCT Summer Drama Camp a try this year for William (7).

Nashville Children’s Theatre programs focus on the process of playbuilding.  Their philosophy is ”that, through theatre, every child can become more comfortable and confident with their own voices, bodies and ideas as well as be better able to work as a part of a healthy ensemble.”

I was very impressed with the enthusiasm and attitude of the staff on the first day, as well as the remainder of camp. Drop off and pick up went smoothly every time.  Every afternoon after camp William excitedly told stories of the days events, and the active day left him ready for sleep at bedtime.

A typical day at camp consists of group games, warm-ups, and class time.  The group games are designed to build class community and emphasize specific theatre skills.  Warm-ups exercise the ”actor toolbox” of body, voice and mind.  Class time builds foundation skills, as well as being used to build and rehearse the show the kids present on the last day of camp.

Halfway through the week we were given newsletter explaining what and how  the students were learning, and on the last day the kids put on a play for the parents in the NCT stage.  It was really amazing!!  What I liked the most was that the kids themselves took part in creating the play allowing  their individual creativity and humor to shine.

According to William, “The best part about drama camp was doing group games, acting, putting together the story for the play then adding ideas, and doing the play.  I made some great new friends!”
