Strengthen and Balance Your Chakras With Yoga

Yoga is a gentle way to help strengthen and balance your chakra system.  Here you will find a list of the chakras and which yoga poses best strengthen and balance each one. If you are unsure about a pose, just click on it and you will be linked to Yoga Journal’s instruction and video page for that pose.  

If you have never practiced yoga before, it would be a good idea for you to find a qualified teacher to help you with the basics before trying these yoga stretches and poses.

Hopefully this will encourage you to practice yoga and bring more balance into your life!! 

Muladhara:  The Root Chakra (Chakra 1 – Red).  The Root Chakra is located between the tailbone and the genitals, in an area medically termed the perineum.   It  relates to your basic physical needs — safety, security, and survival.  The Root Chakra, when functioning at optimum capacity, is the chakra that makes you feel “grounded”.  People with healthy Root Chakras feel connected to all that is around them—feel “one” with the planet, people, and all living creatures. 

Yoga Poses to Help Strengthen and Balance the Root Chakra:

Svadhisthana:  The Sacral Chakra (Chakra 2 – Orange).  The Sacral Chakra is located between the belly button and the sex organs.  This chakra controls your ability to experience pleasure and regulates your sense of taste, creativity, sexuality, and sensuality.  When it is properly balanced, the Sacral Chakra helps energy flow from the lower chakras up into the higher ones.

Yoga Poses to Help Strengthen and Balance the Sacral Chakra:

Manipura:  The Solar Plexus Chakra (Chakra 3 – Yellow).  The Solar Plexus Chakra is located between the solar plexus and the belly button.  This chakra provides energy to follow your own unique path in the world. Dynamic and charismatic people have well balanced  Solar Plexus Chakras. 

Yoga Poses to Help Strengthen and Balance the Solar Plexus Chakra:

Anahata: The Heart Chakra (Chakra 4 – Pink and Green).  The Heart Chakra is located in the area of your heart and forms the center of the entire chakra system.  It forms a connection between your basic needs (lower chakras) and your spiritual desires (higher chakras).  It controls your ability to love others, and love yourself as well.

Yoga Poses to Help Strengthen and Balance the Heart Chakra:

Vishuddha:  The Throat Chakra (Chakra 5 – Blue).  The Throat Chakra is located at the base of your throat and controls your ability to communicate.  This chakra is closely tied with your sense of hearing, meaning when you have a balanced Throat Chakra you will be an excellent listener as well as a wonderful speaker.  

Yoga Poses to Help Strengthen and Balance the Throat Chakra:

Anja:  The “Third-Eye” or Brow Chakra (Chakra 6 – Indigo).  The “Third-Eye” or Brow Chakra is located at the center of the brow and helps you perceive life imaginatively and intuitively.  It controls how your ability to visualize and fantasize, artistic creativity and perception, your dreams, and the like. 

Yoga Poses to Help Strengthen and Balance the Third-Eye or Brow Chakra:

Sahasrara:  The Crown Chakra (Chakra 7 – Violet, Gold and White).  The Crown Chakra is located at the top of the head and is a portal to spiritual enlightenment and infinite wisdom.

    Interesting Yoga article Becki. I followed some of the links to the Yoga Journal and did subscribe to a couple of the newsletters. Diana and I have a go at Kundalini Yoga occasionally, but don’t stay with it. I am becoming a fan of Luminearth. There is a great deal of good information here.
